The ASTM E2128 forensic Guideline for building leak detection

The ASTM E2128 is just one of many industry standards and guidelines that our team of in-house water intrusion specialists utilizes during our forensic water leak investigations and water intrusion testing services.

What is the official name of the ASTM E2128

The official name of the E2128 published by ASTM International is the Standard Guide for Evaluating Water Leakage in Building Walls.

Who Performs the Water Intrusion Testing and Building Leak Detection Services for Xpress Testing?

Our team is staffed by Lab Certified Test Professionals who are Water Intrusion Experts.  That means our Test Managers are all qualified to perform water leak detection services here in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.  As a professional Testing Agency we remain an independent third party to the testing process and make sure that our investigations are both methodical and scientific as it applies to how we approach the water intrusion testing and rain leak detection process.

Scope of Work for Forensic Water Intrusion Testing and Rain Leak Detection on Buildings Using the ASTM E2128:

Xpress Testing conducts water intrusion tests in an effort to locate the source of the known water leakage as it relates to the exterior of the building being tested.  Exteriors are made up of various products and components, such as walls systems, windows, doors, decks, etc.

When used properly this guide may also be extended to other horizontal and vertical systems of the adjacent construction.  Keep in mind we are focused on testing your structure with the primary goal of replicating known water leaks and identifying the areas on the exterior that are causing the interior water leakage.  We aim to find the point of origin, but keep in mind there can often times be multiple points of failure causing your water leak.

If you have a rain related water leak or moisture intrusion that is causing damage to the inside of your building, we test the outside (or exterior cladding of your building) with ourCalibrated Rain Simulation Machines to source and find the problematic water leak locations.  On the interior side we have our Test Managers monitor for water intrusion with the aid of electronic water leak detection tools such as infrared camera systems (IR Technology) which are used to scan interior surfaces in an effort to locate and detect potential thermal anomalies.  In addition, other leak detection tools include moisture meters & water leak detection probes.

Applicable Test Area(s) and Products to Test for Water Intrusion in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego:

We can forensically test and investigate most areas of a building's exterior cladding including but not limited to: windows, doors, walls, and more (i.e.- decks, balconies, walkways, exterior grade, etc).  Think of it this way, if there is a vertical or horizontal surface on the exterior of your building that you believe is leaking water or having moisture intrusion, then we can probably test it as long as there is a safe way to access the location.

Test Procedure for ASTM E2128:

Forensic water intrusion testing is performed by an Xpress Testing water intrusion specialist in order to replicate known water leakage. Through a scientific step-by-step process we attempt to find the source of the water leak, the path in which it may enter into a building, and then compare the test results with the real-life actual damage that has occurred to make an assessment if we have accurately replicated the known water intrusion.

Some of the diagnostic testing tools and instruments that we utilize during out water intrusion testing services include but are not limited to:
